Physics can be defined as the science of matter, motion, and energy.物理可以被定义为物质、运动和能量的科学。

define有“定义”的意思，表示“把……定义为……”时，一般用过去式something be defined as something。

define的名词是形式definition，而by definition这个短语可不能只按照字面意思理解为“按照定义”。by definition一般用来表示“必然（有某种品质）”，例如：

People say that kids are by definition impatient.人们说，孩子必然是没有耐心的。

In spite of the terrible congestion, I was on time for the appointment.尽管交通严重堵塞，我还是赶上了约定的时间。

in spite of是一个大家都比较熟悉的短语了，表示“尽管……”的意思。如果我们说in spite of oneself，意思就和“尽管”完全不同了。in spite of oneself一般用来表示“不由自主地，身不由己地”：

The comedy made him laugh in spite of himself.这部喜剧让他不由自主地笑了起来。
